LAVENDER IN MONFERRATO
17/06/2023 - 31/07/2023
2 nights - 3 days
DAY 1 Arrive in the early afternoon to Monastero Bormida, unique village between Monferrato and Langhe, which preserves the castle in the low area and the town in the high area, in contrast to the others nearby. We will visit the stunning 14th century castle which was originally a monastery and whose tower was a bell tower and enjoy an aperitif in one of its beautiful halls. After the visit, walk through the small village and stop at the famous big bench with the heart shaped back, here also in a smaller version close to the Romanesque bridge. Transfer to Cessole, where Monferrato becomes Langa-Astigiana: we will dine and overnight at an Organic agriturismo immersed in nature.
DAY 2 After breakfast in the agriturismo, visit the nearby Negro herbalist shop of Cessole which saw the birth of the famous “Toccasana” remedy, thanks to the numerous herbs in the surrounding area. Return to agriturismo for some free time and lunch with typical dishes of the Langhe. In the afternoon, transfer to Parco Quarelli of Roccaverano, the stunning open-air museum of contemporary art. We will take a guided tour with a naturopath who is an expert of wild herbs which in this area give Robiola di Roccaverano DOP its characteristic taste. At the end of the visit, we will transfer to a beautiful lavender field close to a farm specialised in the production of saffron. In the lavender field we will enjoy the unique experience of a gourmet picnic at sunset. Return to agriturismo for overnight stay.
DAY 3 After breakfast in the agriturismo, depart for the return journey and stop in Acqui Terme, spa town already well known since Ancient Roman times for its thermal properties. Its beauty can be seen walking along the streets of the centre, full of wine bars and shops that sell local wines and products. A delightful walk will lead to the discovery of the remains dating to Roman times, such as the ruins of the imposing aqueduct, to the Archaeological Museum which hosts an important collection of finds that go from earliest antiquity to the threshold of the moderne era. Other must-see sites are the Bollente, a marble aedicule, now symbol of the town, from where thermal and healing waters flow at a temperature of 75°C; the Cathedral of the Assumption which is home to the triptych of Our Lady of Monserrat, the masterpiece of the Spanish painter Bartolomè Bermejo; Piazza Italia with the scenic Nymph Fountain, the majestic Grand Hotel Nuove Terme and its Liberty-style Café which still evokes a 19th century look, as well as offering stylish aperitifs which use local artisan ingredients. Possibility of lunch with tasting of wines at the Regional Wine Store “Terme e Vino” (additional charge of €15 per person).
