Business description

A historical-archaeological and food and wine route departs from the Roman city of Libarna that will allow the tourist to discover the local products that retain the most authentic expression of the past. In this corner of Piedmont, which embraces Liguria and where the Apennines look on to the sea, the key protagonists are the two great wines of the territory: the Gavi Docg and the Timorasso Terre di Libarna. Artisans of taste, producers and companies of outstanding products, will tell the ancient flavours and stories connected to the wine production of this land, starting with the Archeoflavours.

Arrive to Gavi Ligure, check in to B&B or agriturismo and lunch at leisure.

Walk in the old town (Orange Flag TCI) where between the narrow streets and the coloured houses of the centre we reach the Church of San Giacomo, a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture. We climb towards the FORT for a guided tour of the polygonal fortress built between the 16th and 17th century.

The itinerary continues with a visit to a winery which produces organic wine and where one of the outstanding products is the Cortese di Gavi Docg obtained from the fermentation and aging in terracotta amphorae. Tasting in cellar.

Return to Gavi - Dinner in osteria with traditional dishes.

After breakfast, the day starts in Libarna with a visit to the ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA of the Roman city built in 148 B.C. along the Via Postumia that connected Aquileia to Genoa. You will go through the history of the city together with the tale of the ancient flavours and wine production/trade arriving to our days with Archeoflavours, i.e. those foods and products which, adapted and transformed throughout the centuries, are eaten to this day. Continue with a visit to the MUSEUM OF LIBARNA that preserves the archaeological remains found in the site and bears witness to the daily life of the Roman city.

Delicious break with Archeoflavours in a pastry shop where you can enjoy gallette and "tessellae" made of spelt and the bacio di Libarna (based on apples and hazelnuts, the same ingredients used for desserts in Roman cuisine).

A quick lunch, again in Serravalle, always in search of Archeoflavours with a break to try the traditional farinata, a pancake produced simply with chickpea water flour salt and olive oil cooked in a wood burning oven.

In the early afternoon, we will reach the town of Voltaggio, one of the most "Ligurian" towns of Alessandria, whose Roman origin derives from the passage of the ancient Via Postumia, centre of trade from the port of Genoa.

After a stroll around the historic centre with a stop at the Romanesque bridge of Paganini over the River Lemme and a visit to the Church of S. Maria Assunta, we will discover a small gem, the ART GALLERY OF THE CAPUCHIN CONVENT with its delightful paintings by Ligurian, Piedmontese and Lombard painters. On the return journey, stop in the town of Carrosio to taste amaretti, almond-based biscuits, here skilfully produced by four generations who have been awarded the prestigious De.Co. trademark of excellence. Besides tasting them, on reservation it will be possible to take part in their production. Return to Gavi, free time for an aperitif in the wine bars of the centre. Dinner in agriturismo.

After breakfast, visit to another outstanding winery of the area. In addition to all the wines produced, we will discover another Cortese Docg vinified in amphora.

To conclude our visit, with a short 1-km stroll on a paved road from the centre of Bosio, we can reach the Big Orange Bench, number 84 of the circuit devised by the American designer Chris Bangle. The bench is positioned on the hillock of Ronco and from its breathtaking view over the vineyards we can catch a glimpse of Mount Tobbio and its ancient church.
