Alessandria, second leg of the travelling exhibition in the cities located along the 165 km of the railway line.

An exhibition which recalls the 170 years since the inauguration of the Turin-Genoa railway line on which Italy was made. Designed to connect the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia to its port on the Ligurian Sea, in a few decades it became the backbone of the economic development of united Italy, forming one of the growth axes and an extraordinary tool to connect the North-West territory to the rest of the country, but above all to the rich nations of Continental Europe.

The story of this railway is not only a fundamental and fascinating chapter of our history: it is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of connecting infrastructure in Europe at the start of the third millenium. Truly, past and present merge along these tracks to shape our future.

The exhibition provides a synthetic respresentation of the huge infrastructural, but also economic, political and administrative effort, which proved fundamental for the construction and the consolidation of the line on which "Italy was made".

The display project was promoted by the Committee set up to celebrate the 170th anniversary of the railway line, built in just six years between 1848 and 1853: the committee was formed by Fondazione SLALA (Sistema Logistica del Nord-Ovest) to support and give cultural weight to the projects of strenghtening the infrastructural network of the Italian north-western regions.

Promoted by Fondazione SLALA, Sistema Logistico del Nord-Ovest, in association with the Chamber of Commerce of Alessandria-Asti, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria, the Municipality of Alessandria and the University del PIemonte Orientale, it will be inaugurated on 7 December 2022 at 6 pm and remain open to the public until 5 February 2023.

The inauguration is scheduled for Wednesday 7 December at 6 pm and the exhibition will remain open until Sunday 5 February at the following times: Friday 4pm - 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm. Admission is free, and the ticket is also valid for the museum “Alessandria Città delle Biciclette”, hosted on the third floor of the same Palazzo Monferrato.

Inside, visitors can admire precious collections of local painters and sculptors, as well as a collection dedicated to the battle of Marengo fought in 1800 a few km away.

Lunch at leisure.
In the afternoon, time to visit Palazzo Monferrato to see the exhibition
"Una rotaia lungo 170 anni" (A 170-year-old rail track).

"2023 marks 170 years since the inauguration of the Turin-Genoa railway line, the fundamental artery for the development of Pre-Risorgimento Piedmont and, above all, of united Italy. The infrastructure was realised between 1848 and 1853, by initiative of Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, then prime minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia, with an extraordinary commitment of resources and technology, while the project design and implementation were preceded by a twenty-year reflection on the traffic routes between Italy and Europe that still remain a base for making choices for the present and future of our country".
Roberto Livraghi - Exhibition Curator

At the end, aperitif in a historic pastry shop of the centre.
Dinner in bistrot/osteria with local menu.
Overnight in hotel.

After breakfast, free time to visit the Civic Museum of Palazzo Cuttica, the Art Rooms with the cycle of medieval frescoes or the Marengo Museum just outside the town. End of package.
