Alessandria Theatre Season. Off-segment: "ANTI(g)ONE CITY"
Dates
12 April 2024
Description
A male chorus helps the public to understand the history of this contemporary version of Antigone, immersed in the city, the story of its two young protagonists, Antigone and Haemon, and of their battle in a world of indifferent and cruel adults.
Antigone challenges the State, challenges the law of men for love, and for reasons of the heart, and is punished atrociously. In the classically inspired Antigone, the Thebans will understand the errors committed but it will be too late. ANT(g)ONE CITY will make these men the ambassadors of a new message to hand down, and of a new self-determination on these issues: female condition and fragility of young men and women who do not want, or no longer know how to listen.

ART FILE AND DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Antigone challenges the State, she challenges the laws of men for love, and for the reasons of the heart, and will be atrociously punished for it.
Why should we still listen and watch the vicissitudes of Antigone?
Because Antigone is a political and generational manifesto, an adolescent girl subverts the rules to say what she thinks, and it is also a cry for help.
She is joined by another two girls, Ismene and Haemon, who have the courage to say their own in an adult world, which is ruthless and completely deaf.
They need to grow up, helped and accompanied; instead, they are judged and afraid.
In this divided city of Thebes, still at war, the war is not ancient, but recent, like the city of Antigone and its citizens, we are the Thebans.
Social and Community Theatre is what we bring to the stage, our community, our children, our teenagers who go to school and we think we know them.
We fool ourselves, thinking that we know what is in their hearts, fears, worries, hopes, dreams.
Instead, we often know nothing because we are afraid to ask and listen to the truth about them and about us.
A female chorus and a male chorus alternate with each other, in telling the vicissitudes of the three young protagonists, who tackle situations often bigger than themselves.
A warning for the adult world to attentively observe and love the young women and men who are our most precious legacy, and a prayer to the latter never to give up and always fight for their ideas and their life.
The young actors making their stage debut are Maria Elena Guidetti, Tommaso de Santa and Alex Plasa students of the acting school of the Stregatti Theatre Company, who attend the high schools of Alessandria.
Ours is a way to speak to the young people through their voices, a class of the Fashion department of the Fermi Institute worked in class on Antigone and contributed to the garments worn by the young actors, the elements which form the two choruses go on stage bringing themselves like people who have the desire to carry a message.
All together we try to carry that feeling which was typical of the theatre of ancient Greece, the involvement of an entire community which mobilizes itself, this is our first step.
We aspire to a more complex participation next year, involving students and teachers, schools, free citizens in the creation of our next city of Antigone.

Anti(g)one City is a contemporary re-interpretation of the tragedy of Sophocles who wants to reflect on the cry for help of an adolescent, Antigone, who is demolished by the intransigence of an adult.
King Creon, her uncle, does not accept Antigone’s reasons in name of the law, only to be sorry to have done so when it is too late.
Very young actors are put on stage by the Stregatti Company to tackle the theme of the fragility of adolescents, and the lack of openness of adults to accompany them along their growth
