The Piedmontese lands of the white Cortese Gavi wine, amaretti biscuits and farinata (chickpea flatbread) of Novi, the castles of southern Monferrato, the museums dedicated to the Campionissimo (Champion), Fausto Coppi: all this (and much more) is part of this intense 4-day experience, between the vineyards of the area of Novi, the gently rolling hills, and Ligurian Apennines.
Day 1 | Novi Ligure
0 km, 0 m
Afternoon, accommodation and introductory briefing by our guide.
Visit to the centre of Novi Ligure.
Day 2 | From the fort to the convent. Towns crossed: Gavi, Bosio, Carrosio, Voltaggio, Arquata Scrivia, Gavi.
This bike tour is the perfect meeting between two bordering lands: Piedmont and the Old Republic of Genoa, which can still be enjoyed through the food, traditions, culture and language typical of this territory, where the hill gradually leaves room to the first signs of the Ligurian/Piedmontese Apennines. Authentic jewels, like the village of Gavi (awarded the Orange Flag by Touring) with its imposing Genoese fort and the enchanting town of Voltaggio with its strong Ligurian features and beautiful former Capuchin friar convent, are the added value of this fantastic itinerary.
Tastes and visit to the amaretti production factory, where you can try your hand at baking them, sipping some excellent spumante.
Day 3 | On the roads of Fausto Coppi. Villages and towns crossed: Gavi, Serravalle Scrivia, Sardigliano, Sant’Agata Fossili, Carezzano, Castellania, Paderna, Villalvernia, Novi ligure, Gavi.
Everyone knows Fausto Coppi but few know his places, his village, those streets where, since he was a boy, he studied as a “Campionissimo” (champion) and that today can be travelled to their destination, his birthplace in Castellania. His house (visit) has become a museum which preserves the most intimate and private aspect of the Campionissimo. To cycle along Fausto’s roads also means getting to know the beautiful Tortona hills close up, with their tiny villages that have kept their rural and genuine appearance of this part of Piedmont!
Wine tasting in the winery of Marina Coppi, managed by Fauto’s grandson.
Visit to the Museum of the Campionissmi.
Taste the classical farinata (chickpea flatbread) and a glass of wine in Novi.
Day 4 | Tour of the castles of Southern Monferrato. Towns crossed: Gavi, San Cristoforo, Francavilla Bisio and Tassarolo.
This delightful cycle tour travels the hills of Gavi in the heart of the area that produces the white Cortese Gavi wine. This itinerary offers the possibility to get to know the territory’s thousand-year-old history thanks to the multiple castles and manor houses that dot this part of Monferrato. The surrounding hills embraced by the Ligurian Apennines offer different and breathtaking views.
